The Soldier’s Role

On monumental strands of grass
The soldiers moved from mass to mass
Building what must dear be made
a fearful war in memory fade

A fight for love a fight for peace
A fight for life's extended lease
If only one man take his turn
So other men can see and learn

The battle waged from noon to dusk
Ratted flesh and heated musk
For five feet pushed a five feet loss
Some would gain at others cost

See this meaning of tragic war
Each to find that each wants more
And in the end to see the goal
A wasted land burned ash coal

So one goes home to find a life
One goes home to meet his wife
Few go back to walk their blocks
Most return in piney box.
